Overview

In Part 1 of this series, we examined how our society's policies, culture and leadership impacts fathers’ roles when it comes to engaging in their children’s lives. Building from that, Part 2 brings us a real-world example of how changes are being made, one father at a time.

During this event, Diako (he/him), a teen father, shared how he is challenging the prevailing myths about young fathers raising a baby. We also heard from Diako’s mom, Sara (she/her), and learned about how they support each other, the changes they want to see in the world, and what they need from providers like you to help strengthen the system to support and love our male fathers and father figures.

About Our Speaker

Mike Browne, Senior Director for Community Engagement at Cultivate Learning at the University of Washington

Mike Browne (he/him) is an East Coast transplant from New York with a Master of Business Administration in International Business and Marketing. He currently serves as the senior director for Community Engagement at Cultivate Learning at the University of Washington, where he organizes culturally responsive professional development workshops and opportunities for leaders working with young children. Prior to that, he served as community engagement manager at Hilltop Children’s Center and Educator Institute. After exchanging his tap shoes for football shoes, he played Division 1 football for the University at Albany as cornerback and safety. Following three years of working and living in London and Spain, he found his way to Seattle, where he has been building bridges between communities to help create a city where the voices of the marginalized are heard, inclusive policies are created and residents unite to form a vibrant urban center. While his job titles have changed over the years, a few things have remained the same – his ability to create and implement purposeful and desired community change, form effective relationships and sustain community vitality.
