Description
Talking about partner abuse can be difficult and painful. Discussing men who are abused can be particularly challenging. Men are abused by their partners at a higher rate than many people realize, but stereotypes, fear, misinformation and societal pressures often get in the way of recognizing their experiences, offering them support and ensuring they have access to resources.
Join us for an insightful presentation where counselor and author Ann Silvers will address three common myths about female-to-male partner abuse: “It doesn’t happen,” “It isn’t that bad,” and “It doesn’t hurt.” Drawing from hundreds of real-life stories she’s heard from men who were abused, women who abused, and their families, she’ll describe what each of the seven forms of partner abuse—verbal, physical, sexual, financial, spiritual, legal and emotional/psychological—looks like when men are on the receiving end. She’ll also reveal what she’s learned from decades of counseling people and couples about what helps and what makes matters worse. Participants can enter a drawing for a copy of her book.
This workshop will be followed by a father sharing his experience recovering from an abusive relationship, the challenges he overcame to find services for himself and his children, and insights as to what can be done to help fathers in similar situations.
